Adamson Contractors has always had a keen eye on applying organic manures accurately. This attention to detail, along with investment in Bunning’s Lowlander HBD spreaders, has seen the business grow considerably.

The spreader fleet owned by the contracting company consists of five Bunning Lowlander HBD HD 175 machines and part of the reason for choosing Bunning was the consistent application to 24m.

The dynamically balanced horizontal beaters feature Boron shredding cutters to break down bulky material to an even consistency. The 1.1m diameter spinning discs have five adjustable blade positions to alter spreading width and apply product evenly. This allows precise and consistent application for a wide range of products.

All models have weigh cell application via Isobus control for easy setting changes and clear displays of machine readouts. Rate control is adjusted via the screen and the spreader automatically matches the floor speed to achieve the required rate.

Variable rate application via prescription maps – a feature on the Bunning Lowlander spreaders – is being requested by more farmers and growers to improve soil health and maximise manures.

Accurate tonnages from each load can be recorded, which is crucial to comply with legislation, but a further benefit is that it also allows detailed job reports to be sent to customers following works.

Keeping five spreaders busy throughout the year is a tall order, but multiple reliable machines keep customers happy and guarantee application accuracy across the fleet, explains Adamson Contractors.

PFC’s three metre disc harrow has now been updated with a new leg offering. The disc harrow has two rows of 12 independently sprung 560mm discs which the company says are well suited for shallow surface seed chitting to a maximum cultivation up to 170mm working depth. Standard specification includes NSK bearings, LED lights, active side screens and straw tines and deflector board between the discs.

The Ares BTX can be combined with the Atom GT subsoiler as a single pass unit for the min till operation of directly after ploughing removing compaction pans and aerating the soil with a maximum working depth of 450mm.

The straw tines aid seedbed preparation and even spreading of debris when operating the discs at 25mm depth for seed chitting. For final soil preparation, the disc operated at your preferred cultivation depth in combination with the Sherp toolbar/subsoiler will provide a finished seedbed ready for drilling.

The deflector board keeps the soil supressed in front of the rear disc when high operating speeds are achieved. As soil passes through, the first disc will be naturally thrown upwards. During high operating speeds this soil will hit the deflector board which diverts the soil downwards for the second row of discs to cultivate.

The steel ring packer provides excellent final soil preparation, the company reckons – breaking any final soil lumps and providing an even soil consolidation. Various packers are available from PFC to suit your needs.

The Puma seed bed cultivator has been designed with strength, quality and consistency at its core. The initial toothed levelling board effectively shatters large lumps as the soil then passes through the front depth control cage roller further preparing the soil structure for drilling.

The standard heavy duty vertical sprung tines provide excellent penetration even in the most challenging soil types. The passive spring action crumbles the soil to its final seed bed readiness. Due to the vertical entry point the tines do not flick stones towards the surface.

By utilising the heavy-duty tine, the rigidity of the tine is maintained which increases the effectiveness of the working tine. The added benefit of a vertical placed tine is any crop residue is evenly distributed and not collected and transported to the lifting out of work point.

The final standard accessory is the standard steel ring packer. Other packer options are available, but in combination on the Puma cultivator it provides superb consolidation and final seedbed preparation, the company says.

After ploughing on the company’s own farm, PFC used this Puma on a single pass then drilled with its tine drill for winter wheat – stating that establishment has been exceptional with an even, consistent seedbed produced.

Both cultivator options can be fitted with an air seeder to offer further rapid crop establishment. Utilising precision metering units and linked to the Isobus or independent control terminal, the air speeders monitor output and adjust on the go.

Land drainage contractor Allan Collyer & Sons says a good drainage system helps to improve timely cultivations and drilling, and promotes good root structure, allowing crops to thrive not only in wet conditions, but also to tolerate drier spells.

Drainage by its very nature is long term – correctly designed and installed schemes can be expected to last 50 years or more, and improvements to soil structure and health can be felt as soon as the drains begin to work.

For advice on land drainage, ditch maintenance, or water storage, contact Allan Collyer & Sons. The company is a dynamic, family owned and run business operating from its base near Bungay, Suffolk.

It operates mainly in Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex and was started by Allan Collyer in 1980 as an agricultural drainage contractor. His main ethos was quality and value for money and this still holds true for his two sons Chris and Colin who now run the company.

Some of Allan Collyer & Sons’ original customers still regularly employ the company to carry out work.

The new flagship, a trailed compact disc harrow called Qualidisc T, boasts four independently mounted frame sections that follow ground contours, with each section carrying two rows of 600mm diameter notched discs – the same as those found on smaller Qualidisc Pro models.

Ground pressure is maintained across pairs of wing sections, maintaining a level, worked soil layer and an even surface. The system remains effective at high forward speeds of up to 20km/hr.

Working depth adjustment is from 2–15cm, and a range of rear packer options are available.

Updates across the Qualidisc range have further adjusted the disc section to bring improved penetration and complete cutting of the soil surface in dry conditions, along with improved levelling on both sides of the machine.

For those operating in light, fluffy soils, an optional pair of star discs can be fitted in place of the standard steel levelling discs.

Two frame options are available on trailed models so you can choose a longer chassis to increase the press options available.

Choices include the soil-on-soil Actipress Twin with its u-profile rings, or the Double Cage rear roller.

The Ceres Sub-Line Grassland Subsoiler is a low-cost, but highly efficient way to rejuvenate and sustain healthy grassland, by relieving compression from the year’s livestock, water and general traffic, with minimal disturbance, and helping to prevent water damage and further compression throughout the winter.

The Sub-Line is designed to achieve the maximum efficiency from your soil by lifting and shattering compaction, allowing air, water and nutrients to flow into the substructure, thus enabling the roots and microbacteria to fulfil their potential. The strong environmental credentials of this machine include its contoured, low-draft legs, which are mounted in-line, achieving great lift and shatter with minimal horsepower and fuel consumption.

It also helps water dissipate through the soil structure preventing flash run-off, or worse, standing water that will further compact the soil, deprive the soil of oxygen and emit greenhouse gases. Additionally, like all Ceres machinery, the Sub-Line is designed, built and manufactured in the UK, reducing its carbon footprint.

The Sub-Line is suitable for all levels of soil management, including contractors and farmers, and as it has been designed for UK soils, it can be more effective than other more expensive machines. The leading discs have independent suspension to help prevent damage to the discs and overload and shock of bearings.

All of the discs can be adjusted with one handle, which has six working positions and one out-of-work position. The discs can be kept in their optimum working position, cutting through the sward cleanly, allowing the leg to pass through without tearing the surface. Each of the legs are mounted on the substantial frame, with two M16 shear bolts for protection. The legs, knock on points and all other wearing components are widely available, which reduces cost and downtime.

It is equipped with a 460mm diameter flat rear roller, which has simple dual turn-buckle adjustment to control the working depth of the machine, and leaves a neat, level finish across the width of the work. There is a galvanised, adjustable scraper mounted within the roller arms to prevent congestion and build-up.

The Sub-Line is available from a single leg machine up to a five-leg machine. All sizes are compatible with Category 2 linkage, from 40–190hp.
