A good drainage system helps to improve timely cultivations and drilling, and promotes good root structure allowing crops to thrive not only in wet conditions, but also to tolerate drier spells which are sure to follow.

Drainage by its very nature is long term, with correctly designed and installed schemes that can be expected to last 50 years or more, with improvements to soil structure and health being felt immediately the drains start to work.

Barn Owl Wireless employs wireless sensors to deliver instantaneous updates on temperature, humidity, and CO2 levels through an easy-to-use web portal. This functionality allows store managers to oversee crop conditions from anywhere in the world. The system’s integration with Martin Lishman’s wireless fan controllers automates the cooling process, activating fans only when needed – conserving energy and significantly enhancing the quality and longevity of stored crops.

The FloorVent underfloor ventilation system is a standalone solution that excels in grain cooling with its high airflow perforated tubes, underfloor ducts, and Pile-Dry Fans. When paired with Barn Owl Wireless, it forms a cohesive grain storage management system.

The FloorVent system effectively expels hot air, prevents warm air recirculation, and guarantees uniform conditioning across the grain store, ensuring optimum storage conditions.

The FloorVent ducts can be replaced with manhole covers, allowing different sections of the building to be used for storage, and to make loading and unloading easier.

These systems not only streamline grain storage management but also improve overall grain quality, which Martin Lishman says showcases its commitment to providing cutting-edge solutions for the agricultural industry.

DC: A leading disc works 2cm below the seeding coulter to cut through trash and create a tilth for the seed to be placed on. The slot is then closed by two rubber press wheels.

D: Has a single disc with large rubber depth wheel followed by two closing wheels.

C: Has a 15mm wide coulter followed by two rubber closing wheels.

DD: A “unique” design. Rather than row cleaners in front of the single disc, a turbo disc runs directly in front of the single seeding disc, so even in the highest volumes of crop residue, the turbo disc and seeding disc remain free of substantial crop residue.

Eligible products from the company’s range include dribble bar and trailing shoe applicators, hose reels and drag hose, slurry separators, flow-meters, mobile slurry chopper pumps and remote-control systems for engine-driven pumps.

Significant funding is available for slurry separators which are a useful management tool, as Tramspread director Terry Baker explains: “Removing solids from slurry makes in-store management easier, especially if the slurry store is covered. This provides increased application output from both tankers and umbilical systems. Less friction in umbilical hoses allows for longer pumping distances and reduces wear on the pump, hose and applicator, and saves fuel too. The more uniform product aids even flow from applicators giving an accurate application to the crop.”

Tramspread is the sole UK importer of high-quality Stallkamp slurry separators made in Germany and keeps a range of parts for these machines in-stock.

“FETF grants are available for mobile separators for the first time, and there are two Stallkamp options,” points out Tramspread’s John Tydeman. “The PSS mobile unit is built around a PSS 5.5-550 separator with two rotary lobe pumps, one to fill the feed hopper and one to pump away the separated liquid. The second option uses a PSG 5.5-600 separator and two progressive cavity pumps. Both have a throughput of 15–20m³/hr and can be either free-standing or trailer-mounted. Funding is also available for fixed separators, and Tramspread also supplies pumps, gantries and control panels to suit individual system requirements.”

Tramspread’s well-known Suffolk range of dribble bars have working widths from 6–24m and a 25mm inter-outlet spacing. They are designed to accommodate flowmeters and NIR sensors with Isobus connectivity for accurate application with full record-keeping. Bomech trailing shoe applicators are also offered.

The company claims its market-leading range of mounted random-wrap hose reels have hose capacities of 600m with single hydraulic motor drive and 1000m or 1400m with twin motor drive. Trailed compartmented hose reels can hold 1600m or 2000m. All twin motor reels can be supplied with 4in, 4.5in, 5in and 6in drag hose.

Tramspread offers two remote control systems for engine-driven pumps: the SIL Vision IV radio control and Teletram 2020 GSM remote control. These offer full engine protection, flow meter connection, fuel level sensing, inlet and outlet pressure and air compressor control. Options include a nurse tank level sensor and pneumatic sponge launcher. Tramspread high-spec PTO-driven pumps also qualify for funding under the new scheme.

“These machines are a must for anyone looking for a professional approach to direct drilling in arable stubbles, such as wheat, barley and grain.” They are also known as overseeders to rejuvenate pastures.

Seeding is only successful if the seed is directly sown into the soil. The drills are equipped with the proven Vredo double-disc system. The pairs of independently sprung discs set 7.5cm apart deposit the seed up to 35mm deep into the soil.

The seed is guided into a V-shaped slit in the sward. Whatever the soil conditions – clay, peat, loam or sand – wet or dry. The roller then closes the slit and ensures good contact between seed and soil. Water and nutrients have thereby easy access to the seed, and this encourages strong root formation and fast germination.

After the clean harvesting of straw, there is no need for prior seedbed cultivation or preparation beforehand, the company explains, as Vredo seeders can sow a large variety of seeds, including arable and cover crops, directly through cover crops up to 15cm in height.

Direct drilling doesn’t disturb the surface and is, therefore, the most environmentally responsible way to drill, Campey says. In addition, the organic layer stays in the top part of the soil, which guarantees healthy crops.

Established in 2002, PHR Farms owns one of the country’s largest herds, with its 1,500 dairy cows producing around 9.5 million litres of milk annually. To keep the livestock well fed over winter, the business has nine trailers rolling in 14 tonnes of grass for up to 12 hours a day in the summer, so needs a wheel loader to work flat out loading grass into its silage clamp.

Volvo wheel loaders have a strong reputation for reliability, efficiency, and operator comfort – and with an agricultural specification now available for certain models, PHR Farms’ interest was piqued. Volvo dealer SMT GB assessed PHR Farms’ needs and delivered Great Britain’s first ag spec L70H wheeled loader together with a silage clamp attachment.

Agricultural specification Volvo wheeled loaders have a third hydraulic function to support a wide assortment of agricultural attachments. The torque-parallel (TP) linkage system provides high breakout, tilt-in and lifting forces, as well as greater load stability when using these attachments. As part of the agricultural specification, the L70H also has wider agricultural tyres and full coverage mudguards that enable it to access all areas on PHR Farms’ two sites.

So far, the wheeled loader has enabled PHR Farms to increase productivity during demanding silage periods. “There’s a lot of pressure on the machine to do this job, but it’s built for it and just puts up with it. This is our first Volvo wheeled loader and it’s a step up from what we’ve run previously. It’s a great machine and we’re really happy with it,” said PHR Farms co-owner Rob Joules.

PHR Farms has taken out a Level 2 Customer Support Agreement for the L70H, giving the business peace of mind that SMT GB’s skilled mobile technicians will proactively service the machine to maintain uptime at a fixed cost per month.

Commenting on the sale, Dale Nicoll, area sales manager at SMT GB, said: “Every single sale is valuable to us. Whether it’s for one or 10 machines is more of a detail than a determiner of the level of support we provide. For us, it’s also about creating a strong and lasting relationship with our customers and ensuring we provide the right machines and solutions to fit their exact requirements. It’s always satisfying to know that we help our customers do a better job than they could yesterday.”

With the increasingly stringent guidelines over the use of chemical weed controls, combined with supply chain issues, mechanical methods are becoming more common practice again for in-crop weed control in sugar beet.

With over 20 years of hoeing experience, Garford says it is recognised as an industry leader in precision mechanical weed control. The company has bought many innovations to market, including the Robocrop vision guidance system.

For sugar beet, Garford offers 6, 12 and 18-row, front and rear-mounted, Robocrop Interrow precision guided hoes. Section Control is available, and with the Tine Raiser frame fully adjustable, each implement can be adjusted to work in other crops, including cereals and maize.

With the unique Garford Pressure Down System on each unit preventing bounce and chatter when working at high speed, a forward speed of 12kph is common and higher speeds possible.

FarmAds dealer account signup banner on farm machinery website

The Pressure Down System transfers weight from the toolbar onto the row wheel unit in order to improve penetration in hard conditions and improve unit and hoe stability.

The Robocrop Guidance System allows for accurate and efficient hoeing, as well as chemical application, for weed management and prevention control. The system uses video cameras and image analysis computers to locate crop position, before guiding the hoes quickly and accurately.

Mechanical weed control products, as part of an integrated weed management system, offer a cost-effective and sustainable solution to growers.

Safe, effective grain storage is key to assuring crop quality and helping prevent loss of premiums through claims and rejections. Good storage practice minimises risk throughout the supply chain and safeguards food safety. Store hygiene is important for eliminating sources of contamination from storage fungi, insects and mites. Stores should be thoroughly cleaned prior to the new intake and the use of the right type of vacuum cleaner is essential to remove debris.

Hugh Crane says its customers are now demanding large capacity high powered industrial vacuums capable of working with fine dusts for prolonged periods of time.

One of its most popular models is the Nilfisk S3 single phase industrial vacuum. Its powerful suction and long hose allows you to clean all areas of your grain store with ease. This machine benefits from a huge filtration area thanks to its large filters. The drop-down waste bins also make for easy waste disposal.

The Nilfisk S3 is a single-phase industrial vac with three “by-pass” motors. It is fitted with an electronic board for easy control and monitoring and is available with a 50-litre bin, 100-litre bin or a Gravity Unload System (GU) with either a plastic or Longopac disposal bag.

All models have an easy-to-use electronic control panel, a manual filter shaker and a sit down container system. Hugh Crane can also offer specialist vacuums including ATEX rated machines for explosive environments such as flour mills where fine dust can cause explosive risks.

William Crane heads up the vacuum division and offers specialist advice and on-site demos on a large range of machines from a number of different manufacturers.

Long term experience in the cleaning equipment industry and a close working relationship with many of the world’s leading equipment manufacturers, allows Hugh Crane to match the right equipment to a specific task, providing efficiency and value for money for each customer.

With over 100 different vacuums to choose from, William can offer an almost bespoke solution, he says.

All equipment is fully tested prior to despatch and delivered to site by our own transport and installed and hand over instructions given to ensure safe and efficient operation.

As well as purchase, Hugh Crane offers lease facilities allowing customers to spread capital costs over a specific period, and has a large hire department.
